I ordered several of the new ColourPop Ultra matte lip shades, as who doesn't love a matte lip? Although the initial release was a bit of a fiasco, I was able to place an order for many shades just before midnight (eastern time) for myself and a makeup friend. I received an email that my order was scheduled for shipment only four days later, surprisingly fast for such a big release, and received it a few days after that.
Swatches done on bare skin, photos outside, no flash, slightly overcast.
I've been wearing one shade each day, so far Trap, Solow, and Tulle. Now I know there's this whole procedure for a matte lip, and so many friends have given me the shocked "are you kidding me?" speech when I tell them my application method. It's called open lipstick, slap it on bare lips, done. If I can find my clear liner I'll use it, but that's only about half the time. I know for "optimal results" I'm supposed to exfoliate, prime, balm, do the chicken dance, powder, blot, and pray to the lipstick gods for positive results, but frankly, I'm too old for all that crap ;) I just want to put it on and go.
Trap and Solow are NOT my colors. I don't know why I occasionally buy these shades, when I know I'll never wear them. But they've already been claimed and will go to a good home. They are a bit dry upon application, but after about 10 minutes I didn't even notice. I didn't bother putting any balm over them (again, that whole "I couldn't be bothered" applies) and they held up fairly well. Trap held on through lunch but after dinner, which involved half a cheeseburger, pickled watermelon rind (something I will not eat again), and an arugula and watermelon salad with dijon vinaigrette, only about half the color was left. With Solow, I forgot I was wearing it and didn't check, but was surprised to see it was still on when I removed my makeup that night. Tulle also held up fairly well but I took it off earlier than normal (after maybe 5 hours). No flaking on my teeth with any of those shades. I did only put on one coat with each of these shades, Trap and Tulle I used UD Ozone multipurpose pencil as a liner only. I don't have much of a problem with feathering, but figure it's worth it to put it on. With Solow, I wore it alone, no liner.
I suspect the darker shades will be a bit more challenging. You can see in the photos that they're not quite as even, Avenue and particularly LAX look like they'll need a second coat for even coverage, and from all the comments I've read, that's where things start to get squirrely. I'll fill you in once I do wear them.
Hope you've found the swatches helpful, and thanks for looking.
